I am familiar with the second painting but have never seen the first before.
I think that first one illustrates why many Atkinson Grimshaw paintings have been damaged by overcleaning, it would be hard to know how much of the darkness was intentional!

That is such a good question. I have wondered so often how dark they really are / should be as reproductions vary so much and cleaning or not is another factor I hjadn't really considered. Thanks for that.
